Over the past few months, we’ve been hearing the same questions come up again and again from the Visa Matcher community. Many of these questions also appear regularly on forums and discussion groups, particularly among people preparing a UK Spouse Visa application or planning an extension.
To help, we’ll be posting regular mailbag Q&As where we’ll address the most common concerns we hear. The aim is not to replace official Home Office guidance, but to help provide some clarity.
Below are four of the questions we are being asked most often.
1. Do we need to have lived together for two full years to apply?
This depends entirely on the type of application you are making.
If you are applying as unmarried partners, you will usually need to show that you and your partner have lived together continuously for at least two years. This must be supported with evidence such as joint tenancy agreements, council tax bills, utility bills, or official correspondence sent to both of you at the same address.
If you are applying as a married couple or civil partners, there is no requirement to show two years of prior cohabitation. The marriage or civil partnership itself is the basis of the application. That said, you should still be able to show that your relationship is genuine and ongoing, particularly for future extensions and settlement.
2. How important is the document checklist and confirmation after submission?
This is something many people worry about, and it comes up frequently.
It is common for applicants to upload their documents online and then feel unsure because they do not receive a detailed confirmation listing every document submitted. In most cases, this is entirely normal. The Home Office will assess the application based on what has been uploaded through the online system.
The biometrics appointment is only for fingerprints and photographs. Staff at the appointment centre do not check your supporting documents. If the Home Office needs anything further, they will contact you directly by email.
3. Do we need to provide relationship evidence again when renewing the spouse visa?
Yes, but the focus is slightly different for extensions.
For an initial Spouse Visa application, you are usually expected to provide a broader range of relationship evidence, such as photographs, communication history, and proof of time spent together.
For a spouse visa extension, the main focus is on showing that the relationship is genuine and ongoing. It’s very important to show proof that you live together. This can include bills, letters, or official documents addressed to both of you at the same address. Some applicants choose to include a small amount of updated relationship evidence, such as recent photographs, but this is generally supplementary rather than central.
4. Can we renew the visa if one partner travels frequently or works abroad?
In many cases, yes.
Frequent travel or overseas work does not automatically prevent a spouse visa extension. What matters is whether the UK is clearly your main home as a couple. You should be able to show that you share a UK address and that your relationship is genuine and ongoing.
That said, long periods spent outside the UK can affect future applications for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship, as absence limits may apply. Make sure you can explain why you spent a long time outside the country and keep records to help prove this.
